Invisalign Made Easy: A Teen’s Guide to Wearing and Caring for Your Aligners

How to Use Invisalign in Mesa AZ

Starting Invisalign® is an exciting step toward a confident smile, and the best part is, you can do it without anyone noticing. At Whiting Dental in Mesa, Arizona, Dr. Ben Whiting helps teens straighten their teeth comfortably and discreetly using clear, removable aligners that fit seamlessly into everyday life.

While Invisalign is easy to use, getting great results depends on how consistently you wear and care for your trays. If you’re wondering how to use your aligners day to day, the answers below will help you keep your smile healthy and your treatment on schedule:

1. How often do I need to wear my aligners?

Your Invisalign trays should stay in for most of the day; about 22 hours is ideal. Take them out only when you eat, brush, or floss. Think of it this way: every hour they’re in your mouth, they’re working to move your teeth. If you skip long stretches without them, your progress slows and your next set might not fit properly.

2. What’s the correct way to put them in and take them out?

Start with clean hands before handling your aligners. To insert, gently line up the trays with your teeth and press them into place using your fingers, starting in the front and moving to the back. Avoid biting them into position; it can damage the trays. When removing them, lift gently from the back molars and work forward. It takes a few tries to get the hang of it, but you’ll get faster every time.

3. How do I keep my aligners clean and clear?

Always rinse your aligners after removing them and brush them lightly with a soft toothbrush and a gentle, fragrance-free soap. Avoid toothpaste; it’s too abrasive and can scratch the surface. You can also soak your trays in Invisalign cleaning crystals or a mild denture solution every few days to keep them fresh. When you’re not wearing them, store them safely in their case so they don’t dry out or get misplaced.

4. Can I eat or drink with my aligners in?

It’s best to remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than plain water. Food particles and colored drinks can stain or warp the plastic, and hot beverages can change the shape of your trays. After meals, rinse your mouth, or better yet, brush your teeth, before putting your aligners back in. This keeps your teeth clean and your aligners crystal-clear.

5. What should I do if I lose or damage one of my aligners?

If an aligner goes missing or cracks, don’t worry; but don’t wait, either. Call Whiting Dental right away. We will let you know if it’s okay to move to your next set or if you should wear your previous trays until a replacement arrives. Avoid skipping ahead without guidance, as that can throw off your treatment timeline.
